Global child health has made great strides in the past 30 years. Under-five mortality rates have fallen by more than half, many more children are in school and fewer children are living in extreme poverty. But five million children per year still die before their fifth birthday, and the risk of death for children in the worst-affected countries is fifty times higher than in countries with the best child health.

Tobias Alfvén is a paediatrician and associate professor of global health at the Department of Global Health, Karolinska Institutet. He joins his colleague Juliet Mwanga-Amumpaire, paediatrician and associate professor at Mbarara University in Uganda, to discuss why so many children are still dying, and what we can do to ensure that more children will survive.
