In 2008, Harald zur Hausen received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery that human papillomavirus (HPV) causes cervical cancer. This discovery revolutionised the gynaecological cell sampling programme against cervical cancer, which today offers HPV testing to all women in Sweden between the ages of 23-70. The discovery also paved the way for the development of preventive vaccines against HPV, which today are so widely used in the world that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has launched global eradication of cervical cancer as a priority goal.

At this seminar you will hear more about the road from discovery to eradication and the current status of eradication of HPV and cervical cancer in Sweden.
